Qualifications
HS Diploma or GED
Completion of a cardiovascular technology course or successful completion of a telemetry/monitor technician course
Must have the ability to examine heartbeat patterns, noting heartbeat irregularities in real time and ensuring the heart monitors are functioning correctly
Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association

Responsibilities
The Telemetry Technician oversees and interprets the cardiac monitor for arrhythmias and changes in heart rhythm
The Telemetry Technician documents patient monitoring data that include rhythm strips and measurements, reports abnormal rhythm or rate, changes in rhythm, applies the telemetry leads accurately, and is able to perform EKG
The Telemetry Technician provides updates of telemetry readings, ensures that the telemetry equipment is functioning well, cleans the tele, troubleshoots and maintains it to prevent malfunctions
The Telemetry Unit is a 38-bed, team-oriented unit that provides a wide variety of Medical/Surgical and diagnostic services to a diverse cardiac population i.e
congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, respiratory compromise and dysrhythmias
Promotes and implements the concept of patient and family-centered care
Promotes a compassionate and supportive environment
Observes and reports to the Registered Nurse patient’s response to intervention/treatments
Knows how to activate code system
Gives report on cardiac rhythm to physicians and RN as request
Gives report to oncoming telemetry technician or relief RN
Reports to RN all rhythm changes; also physicians if available
Consults with RN when in doubt of rhythm
Communicates and records pertinent information to appropriate individuals
Record vital signs and bedside glucose testing results
Documents accurately and legibly on appropriate records
Collects specimens; labels accurately and ensures delivery to appropriate department
Prepares patient for monitoring using proper techniques in electrode placement
Removes and discontinues telemetry transmitter from patients being discharged or transferred
Cleans and disinfects equipment following procedures as assigned
Orders all supplies needed from the storeroom and central supply
Stocks all supplies in appropriate locations and reports all shortages to the charge nurse
May work in areas where medications are stored
This includes checking for expiration dates for kits, trays with meds, IV fluids, needles, etc
rotating and stocking other supplies
Occasionally, transporting the tray/kit for the nurse or physician to provide patient care
Maintains inventory of telemetry transmitters each shift
Run, interpret, and post EKG strips within 3 hours of start of shift
Maintain integrity of telemetry packs (wires, batteries, covers)
Provides and maintains a safe environment and performs proper surveillance for the prevention of falls for patients at risk
Identifies equipment problems and contacts appropriate departments for repair/replacement
Attends meetings and departmental programs as requested
Participates in inter and intra-departmental activities
Maintains adequate coverage of monitors at all times
Maintains alarms on at all times
Completes all monitoring activities by the end of the shift
Completes documentation on telemetry mount sheets each shift
Makes rounds to verify patient status every two hours and PRN
Greets and assists physicians, hospital staff, patients and visitors with questions
Answers phone in a courteous manner
Perform other duties as directed
